Men’s Golf Impresses at Mobile Bay Intercollegiate
South Alabama junior golfer Jack Hiluta fired a 1-under-par 71 en route to earning his first career NCAA victory at the USA-hosted Mobile Bay Intercollegiate Feb 23.
Hiluta, who finished the event fourth overall, won his player group that also included Middle Tennessee’s Kent Bulle.
South Alabama shot 298 as a team, tying for sixth place with defending champions Mississippi State after both teams shot 886 over the final three days.
Lady Jags Drop Home Finale to Denver
Emiko Smith nailed a 3-pointer with one second left to lift Denver to a 64-61 victory over South Alabama’s women’s basketball team at the Mitchell Center Feb. 24.
Shakira Nettles and Christian Shelter led the Jags with 23 and 21 points, respectively. Despite the contributions, USA trailed for most of the contest, only taking a brief lead mid-second half.
South Alabama will next play in the Sun Belt Tournament at Hot Springs, Ark., against Louisiana-Lafayette on March 6 at noon. If the Lady Jags win, they’ll face Western Kentucky in the second round on March 7.
Softball Places Runner-Up at Georgia Invitational
South Alabama softball won three-of-four at the University of Georgia Classic including the first three before falling to nationally ranked Georgia on Sunday.
Pacing the South Alabama offense was second baseman Brittany Fowler, who went 7-for-16 over the weekend, including a triple and three runs scored.
The pitching was headlined by senior Beth Pilgrim, who went 2-1 with 25 strikeouts in 16 innings pitched.
The Jags now stand at 7-6 and return to action Friday at 2:30 p.m. when they face Campbell in the LSU Invitational.
Men’s Basketball to Open SBC Championship Against FAU
USA’s men’s basketball, the Sun Belt’s No. 9 seed, will begin its postseason campaign March 6 against No. 8 seed Florida Atlantic.
The game is slated to begin at 2:15 p.m. and can be viewed on the Sun Belt Web site. If the Jags win, they’ll face Troy in the second round on March 7.
