Last week, the pro-football petition drive broke the required 2,000-signature mark. This goal was met more than a week ahead of the Nov. 10 deadline.
"The overwhelming response that we have received from the student petition truly makes me proud to be a part of this great institution. It is obvious that students are ready to take this university to the next level," said Edwards.
An official announcement marking this milestone will be made during halftime at the University of South Alabama's men basketball game on Nov. 10, according to SGA President Jennifer Edwards.
Edwards encourages all students to come out to the men's basketball game in order to support the Jags and to witness the "historical occasion."
Other events planned for the Nov. 10 celebration include tailgating before the basketball game from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. in the Gamma-Engineering parking lot, the "Party Like a Rockstar" giveaway, a performance by AASA Dance Team and T-shirt giveaways.
The "Party Like a Rockstar" giveaway will occur at halftime. The giveaway includes a trip on a private jet to the Jags versus University of New Orleans game on Jan. 12, limo service and dinner.
On Oct. 29, SGA passed an official resolution in support of NCAA Football. The petition was drafted by Senate Pro-Tem Michael Smith and was sponsored by senators Marc Anderson, Lindsey Edwards, Matt Golden, Sara Hendrix, Pavan Kapadia and Elton Reeves.
The resolution pledged full support for NCAA Football with the conditions of non-interference of funds meant for academic or capital improvements and a fee increase that would leave our fees at lower levels as compared to similar institutions and will provide free tickets to students.
The resolution was passed unanimously.
