OktSOBERfest played host to a three highly informative tables in the Student Center breezeway. The University of South Alabama observed National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week by setting up three tables from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Student Center Breezeway featuring the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, the USA Peer Health Education Sex Team, the Freshmen
Advisory Board and the Freshmen Leadership Council.
The FAB and FLC served "mocktails" which were popular alcoholic mixed drinks minus the alcohol.
"We are want to show everybody that people can have a good time without drinking," one FAB volunteer stated.
The other two tables were more focused on the outcome of what happens when people drink in excess and how to prevent this from happening.
The Sex Team did their part by promoting non-violent behaviors by posting a sign displaying the words "These Hands Don't Hurt". Students were asked to illustrates their commitment to non-violence by leaving their painted handprint on the poster. The handprint banner will be shown all over Alabama at fairs. The "Sex Team" also gave out information concerning their main purpose on campus, which is brininging awareness to the dangers of irresponsible sexual behaviors in a fun and appropriate way. They provided valuable information on several sexual situations through a laid-back, non-judgmental, confidential and interactive environment.
Lastly, the RAINN table was setup by Darleen Dempster, spokeswoman for the University of South Alabama Counseling Center.
The USA Counseling Center is available to all USA students free of charge and open Monday through Friday.
The RAINN table offered knowledge on the signs of an abusive man/woman and also how to prevent a bad situation. It played hand-n-hand with Oktsoberfest because many incidents of abuse are caused by a individuals who are intoxicated. RAINN representatives offered information about substance abuse, specifically alcohol, and how it tends to lead to violence and most likely sexual assault.
Jamie Smith, proud member of Feminist For Progress, was also on site as a volunteer. Smith feels women need to understand and learn about the signs of an abusive man and how they need to vent after experiencing such a traumatizing event.
"A problem can not be handled if we as women are not bold enough to say, YES! Yes, to understanding and yes to accepting help," Smith stated.
OktSOBERfest, "Fun Days without the HAZE,-" has without a doubt held true to its tradition of being informative as well as entertaining.
