Fall is a wonderful time of the year. The weather starts to cool down, jack-o-lanterns make their home in store window displays, and it means Thanksgiving, and a much needed break, is right around the corner. Perhaps one of the best things about autumn is all of the festivals that take place around the city.

The city of Mobile hosts an array of musical, culinary and cultural festivals
throughout the months of October and November. Two of the most well-known festivals are GreekFest and the Mobile International Festival. Both of these events offer great traditional foods, a new cultural experience and lots of entertainment!

GreekFest will take place Nov. 1, 2 and 3, beginning each day at 11 a.m. and ending at 10 p.m. The festivities will take place at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church at 50 S. Ann St. There are two different schedules for Greekfest. The food is scheduled to begin being served each day at 10 a.m., with carry-out orders only. From 11 a.m. until 9 p.m., an inside food line takes place where guests can buy full traditional Greek dinners. From 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. there will also be booths outside selling a variety of Greek food items.

With a menu that boasts slow-cooked lamb, gyros, spanakopita, baklava and almond cookies, Greekfest is worth attending just for the food.

The second schedule is the calendar of events. The schedule of events at Greekfest contains nearly 20 activities, including church tours, lectures, a play center for children as well as vendor booths. Greekfest will also host Nick Trevelas and his live Greek band from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. and again from 3:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. For more information on Greekfest, visit the Web site at http://www.GreekFestMobile.org

For those who enjoy international foods, but aren't partial to Greek cusine, the Mobile International Festival is just a couple of short weeks after Greekfest.

With student days on Thursday and Friday, the big family day for the Mobile International Festival is on Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Mobile Civic Center. The cost is $7 for adults, $6 for senior citizens, $4 for children ages seven through 15 and no cost for children under age six.

The opening ceremony, which will be held at 11:30 a.m., will include a parade of flags by RamCorps from the University of Mobile, the MIF Children's Chorus and an opening address by Mobile Mayor Samuel Jones.
