The Oracle, USA's fine frts review is getting ready to begin work on the 2008 edition. This literary and fine arts magazine publishes student and community work in areas including fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, screenplay, essay, painting, illustration, photography, printmaking and sculpture.
The 2004 Oracle was awarded the pretigious University and College Designers Association award of excellence in their 34th Annual Design Competiton.
Faculty advisors for the Oracle are Ellen Harrington from the English department and Diane Gibbs from the art department. As commented in a 2004 press release from the University of South Alabama, Dr. Harrington boasted that "the students are responsible for every aspect of the publication ... and have every reason to be proud of the Oracle."
This year's editor-in-chief is Alyson Koblas, a graduate student at USA. The art director is William Bunce, visual arts major at USA. The Oracle is also currently looking for students interested in being a member of an editorial board or art board. These members will read selected entries and offer their opinions on those submissions that should be placed in the Oracle. If you are interested in a position on a board, please contact Ellen Harrington or Diane Gibbs.
Submissions for the Oracle are due by Nov. 16. Guidelines for submissions are posted on the Oracle's Web site. All submissions should be sent to oracle@jaguar1.usouthal.edu.
For fiction and non-fiction submissions, students may submit up to 3 works with a limit of 3000 words each. If fiction and non-fiction writing is not your forte, you can also submit an essay on a variety of topics. It has been suggested to choose an essay done in an Engligh class and elaborate on those ideas.
Students may submit a maximum of 3 poems and 5 pieces of artwork in each category: painting, illustration, photography, printmaking and sculpture. For stage/screenplay submissions, students can submit a maximum of 3 scenes and include a brief synopsis of complete work.
The Oracle is also currently in the middle of fundraising through a raffle ticket drawing for a gift basket worth $250. The drawing for this basket will be held at the Poetry Theatre at Satori in November.
If you are interested in seeing what the Oracle looks like, you can pick up a copy of the 2007 Oracle in the art department or the English department.
The Oracle is a wonderful opportunity to show off your creativity and have your work published. I personally encourage you to submit some of your work and see what happens.
