Five candidates have been interviewed for the vice president of student affairs position. Dr. Dale Adams is currently serving as the vice president of student affairs, but he hopes to retire by Jan. 1, 2008.
The University of South Alabama hired Wheless & Associates to locate qualified job candidates and invite them to apply for the position. The University then chose the top five candidates and set up interviews.
University spokesman Keith Ayers has been involved in the search to pre-fill Dr. Adams' position. "We have a great group of candidates who were identified through a private search firm. All are vice presidents elsewhere presently or previously," Ayers said. "They are all being interviewed during a day-long process involving students, faculty, staff, alumni representatives and others. These people will be invited to give input into the final selection."
Four of the five top candidates are male. The only female candidate is black. All five are highly qualified for the position at USA and also have a large amount of experience.
The five main candidates are as follows:
James F. Conneely, Ph.D.
Dr. Conneely is currently the vice president of student affairs at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Ky.. He has been there since 2003. Dr. Conneely received his Ph.D. from Georgia State University in 1992. In his 24 years of experience, Conneely has overseen both public and private institutions with student population sizes ranging from small to medium. In less than five years, Conneely has made many changes at Eastern Kentucky. He has secured $1 million in external support for the department and increased student participation in programs by 42 percent. He has also created many new programs and offices, many whose aim is to increase campus diversity. Conneely re-established the national Pan-Hellenic Council (Black Greek Organizations) at Eastern Kentucky. He also created an office for multi-cultural student affairs and office for community service and student engagement.
