The University of South Alabama's Concert Chorale performed its first concert of the season on Oct. 16, under the direction of Joe Pendleton.
The concert titled "The Six Flags of Mobile" was one of the music department's first performances of the 2007-2008 Musical Arts Series. It presented a group of selections that were a salute to the six nations who have governed Mobile during its history.
The opening piece, Thomas Morley's "Now is the Month of Maying," represented the period of time when Mobile served as the capital of British West Florida. It illustrated the traditional summer holiday May Day, celebrated on May 1. The light and relaxed music emphasized the holiday's activities of dancing around the decorated may pole.
Great Britain, Spain, France, the United States of America, the Confederate States of America and the state of Alabama were also designated pieces for a specific portion of Mobile's extensive history.
Rosephanye Powell's "The Word Was God" was taken from the setting of a biblical passage in John 1:1-3. It is a standard in choral music and is often referred to as "a musical word painting of the act of Creation."
The last selection of the night was Moses Hogan's "I Can Tell the World," a spirited addition to the salute of the 6 nations and a great way to close the program.
The Concert Chorale will be performing the concert again at the Alabama Music Educators Association workshop and conference on Jan. 10 at the University of Alabama.
Upcoming performances include the the USA Symphony Band Fall Concert on Oct. 25, the Concert Choir's "American Folk Songs and Spirituals" on Nov. 1 and the University Chorale's "The 12 Days of Christmas" on Dec. 4. Both concerts will be held at USA's Laidlaw Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m.
