The 2007 University of South Alabama basketball season was kicked off on Oct. 14, when JagFest 2007 was held in the USA Mitchell Center.
Doors opened about an hour before the start to JagFest so potential season ticket holders could test seating around the Mitchell Center, in order to find the best vantage point to watch the Jags from. Athletic department representatives were on hand to answer questions about season tickets and the Fastbreak Club.
South Alabama's cheerleaders kicked JagFest 2007 off by getting the crowd excited with a few cheers. The Prowlers, USA's dance team, then joined the cheerleaders in a couple dance numbers. All of the cheerleaders and the Prowlers were then introduced.
The 2007 South Alabama basketball teams were then introduced. Senior Lady Jag Patriece Brunner showed her excitement for upcoming the season, and got the crowd on its feet and hyped up when she was introduced. Returning seniors Daon Merritt and Demetric Bennett drew the most excitement from the crowd on the men's side.
A three-point shooting competition was then held, with Domonic Tifford, Merritt and Bennett shooting for the men's team, while Shakira Nettles, Amanda Leonard and Monique Jones shot the ball for the Lady Jags. After a tiebreaker was held between Leonard and Jones, Bennett faced off against Leonard. Leonard made more shots than anybody that night, but she did not have enough left in the tank to beat Bennett in the final round.
After the three-point shootout, the Lady Jags took the floor for a 15-minute scrimmage, while coach Rick Pietri took the microphone to preview the Lady Jags' season. Pietri told the crowd, "We expect a lot out of Jeanette Tucker this year, after the great year she had last year." The fans witnessed some hard play by the Lady Jags. Team leaders stood out pretty quickly. Leonard could be seen coaching a couple younger players during some stoppage in play, while Brunner also showed her leadership on the floor. Leonard took a hard charge during the scrimmage, and Pietri joked, "We need to give her a free get out of a sprint card for that charge." Susan Griggioen seemed to be the crowd favorite. The student section cheered for the 6'4" sophomore to be put in the game, and when the coach called for her to take the floor, the students went nuts. The white team, led by Brunner defeated the red team, led by Leonard 14-12.
