University of South Alabama hosted its 7th annual Girls Exploring Math and Science convention. The convention serves as a forum to get young women excited about math and science at an early age. An estimated 380 sixth, seventh and eight grade girls from across the states of Alabama and Mississippi participated in this year's convention, according to Dr. Mary Townsley, professor of physiology in the College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama. Each participant had the opportunity to participate in multiple workshops. Some of the workshops included digging up fossils and learning to determine the fossils' ages, exploring the chemistry of perfume, recording a weather forecast, learning how speech pathologists improve speech and hearing in adults and children, programming robots to find things with radar, plus dozens of other activities.
