Musical Art Series continues at Laidlaw

During the next few weeks, the Laidlaw Performing Arts Center will feature University faculty and student concerts, as well as several guest performances.
South Alabama's University Chorale is preparing for their first performance of the year. On Oct. 16, the University Chorale will perform "The Six Flags of Mobile." According to the music department's correspondence, this concert will feature music of composers from the six different nations that have governed Mobile over its 300-year history. Composers will be from France, England, Spain, the Confederate States, the United States and Alabama. The Chorale is directed by Dr. Joe Pendleton, director of choral activities at the University of South Alabama. Tickets for this event in the Musical Arts Series will only be sold at the door.
On Oct. 25, the University of South Alabama Symphony Band will perform their fall concert. The symphony band is conducted by Dr. Greg Gruner. According to the music department's correspondence, this concert will feature Dr. Peter Wood in the premiere of a new trumpet concerto, the "Concerto for Trumpet and Wind Ensemble." This ensemble was composed by Robert J. Bradshaw and is designed to celebrate the courage of Sarajevo, Yugoslavia which was destroyed by civil war in the 1980s and has since rose again and shows strong determinism to keep their rich history alive.
The symphony band's concert will begin with the "Overture to Pepito" by Jacques Offenbach, which will be guest conducted by Robert Gilmore. Following this trumpet concert, the band will perform the musical tribute to Rosa Parks titled "A Movement for Rosa." This concert will also feature "October" by Eric Whitacre that depicts the changing of the seasons and "Shadows of Eternity" by Thomas Stone. This concert is sure to be an amazing experience that you do not want to miss.
On Oct. 28, Laidlaw will feature guest guitarist Christopher Berg. Berg was trained at the Peabody Conservatory of Music. He has performed at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York and has also been honored by the National Endowment for the Arts as a recipient of a Solo Recitalist Fellowship. The State newspaper out of Columbia, S.C., has praised Berg for being "electrifying …hugely enjoyable and freshly played." This concert is part of the University of South Alabama's Musical Arts Series and is sure to be a treat.
