For those of you interested in creative writing, the Orange Beach Public Library has a very unique program for you. Every year, they host a program designed to teach basic creative writing skills such as character development, dialogue, tense, setting and publication.
Sept. 29 and Oct. 11, the program featured guest speakers who spoke on different aspects of creative writing. Angela Rand, the adult programs librarian at the Orange Beach Public Library, has provided information about these speakers and their topics.
On Sept. 20, local writer Jim Gilbert from the River City Press presented a lecture for the creative writing seminar. Gilbert spoke about the agonizing process of the query letter and about getting your writing published. A well written query letter can help prove your qualifications to the editor, as well as give you the opportunity to do research for the piece that may be easily converted into an article. Gilbert's animated lecture featured samples of query letters and proved to be a very good lesson.
On Oct. 11, Reilly Maginn, author of the medical thriller "Bio" presented a lecture focusing on character and space. Maginn spoke about developing character and setting. If you are interested in a recording of Maginn's lecture, please contact the Orange Beach Public Library at http://www.orangebeachlibrary.org.
The ultimate goal of this writing seminar is to encourage attendees to participate in National Novel Writing Month during Nov. Participants begin writing on Nov. 1 and endeavor to finish a 175-page novel by Nov. 30. The Orange Beach Public Library plans to hold writing sessions for this event to assist regular attendees of their seminars and other interested participants in National Novel Writing Month.
The National Novel Writing Month competition is designed to encourage a fast process. They are more concerned with quantity of words than the quality of writing. This competition targets those who have always had a desire to write a novel, but have not had the motivation nor the time to do so. The Orange Beach Public Library hopes to show their support of this competition by encouraging their seminar attendees to participate.
The Orange Beach Public Library hopes to expand their writing seminar during fall 2008 to the entire Gulf Coast area. They plan to have more local writers teaching and lecturing, in hopes to encourage greater attendance. For more information, contact Angela Rand at arand@cityoforangebeach.com or visit the Orange Beach Public Library.
