The South Alabama chapter of the National Society of Collegiate scholars started out as an idea by founding president Nathan Simmons in the fall of 2006.
"It's been a great challenge building this chapter from the ground up, and it would have never even been possible without the help and advice we have received from our faculty and the NSCS national office," reports Nathan.
Since then, he has assembled a team that now makes up the USA chapter's founding officers. This group is currently working hard to lay the basis for the new organization. "We have been working hard to get our chapter going, and we all foresee a very bright future for NSCS here at South Alabama."
Helping in this task are the founding officers Shruti Agarwal, Jami Conner, Alex Gates, Casey Knight, Andrew Harris, Jason Olson, Travis Roth, and Andrew Weber. Each is creating the structure of his/her office while working together to form an organization capable of making a positive influence on South Alabama and the city of Mobile.
"The officers and I believe that NSCS has tremendous potential to make a positive contribution to USA and the Mobile community," said Dr. Mara Kozelsky, the organization's faculty adviser and professor of history at the University of South Alabama, elaborates.
NSCS is a non-discipline-specific honor society that focuses on "Honoring and inspiring academic excellence and engaged citizenship for a lifetime." To achieve this goal, NSCS offers membership invitations to first- and second-year college students based on grade point average and class standing. This gives its members a real chance to get involved with community activities, lead by joining an officer's committee and learn by being surrounded by like-minded individuals. There are 228 chapters of NSCS around the country that come together at an annual convention (set in Orlando for the coming year). Membership benefits also include scholarship opportunities, leadership development training, travel opportunities and career resources.
The 193 charter members for South Alabama will be inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars on Oct. 14 at 2:30 p.m. in the Student Center Ball Room. This induction also serves as the society's first of many community service projects. All attendants are encouraged to participate in a food drive by dropping off canned goods at the door.
