The mission of United Way of Southwest Alabama is to lead resource development and collaboration through partnership with agencies and the community so that we strengthen our community and improve lives.
United Way is not a relief organization; it raises and provides funds to relief organizations. Volunteers allocate donors' gifts to agencies working throughout the community so that these organizations have what they need to improve lives.
United Way of Southwest Alabama is a local and autonomous organization helping 125,000 people by funding 58 health and human service agencies through Clarke, Mobile and Washington Counties.
Some services provided by these agencies include relief during disaster, family counseling, mental and physical rehabilitation, emergency food, clothing and shelter, and programs for children, the handicapped and the elderly.
Organizations like Salvation Army, Penelope House, Home of Grace and Bay Area Food are just a few of the 58 agencies funded by United Way of Southwest Alabama. All money raised in Mobile stays in the community to help us, our neighbors, friends and loved ones.
"We must make the connection that participates of United Way are not always there by choice but often times by circumstances. Each of us is subject to being a recipient of assistance from United Way at any point in our lives," Warren Greene, director of environmental services at the USA Medical Center and campaign chair at USA, said.
The relationship between the University of South Alabama and the United Way of Southwest Alabama is as old as USA itself. Even at a time after Katrina, when a great deal of the faculty, staff and students were themselves going through a difficult time, USA donated $261,264.57 to United Way.
The United Way of Southwest Alabama campaign message this year is "what matters." Helping feed the hungry, providing support and comfort for physically and mentally challenged and abused children, assisting the homeless to find a shelter, supporting women suffering from domestic violence, and saving people from drug abuse are the things that matter.
