The Communication Student Association is definitely one student organization that is expanding and making a name for it self
this year.
A growth from the Public Relation Student Society, CSA is an organization for all students but is primarily focused on communication majors and minors. PRSS was replaced because it only focused on one aspect of the communication field, whereas CSA focuses on every track of study the
communication department offers.
Those tracks include advertising, public speaking, organizational communication, communication technology, interpersonal/rhetoric, broadcast journalism, print journalism and radio/TV/film. Students may only choose one track to study. The organization allows students to learn specific aspects dealing with their track.
The organizations adviser, Mrs. Katherine Rigsby, states that, "After talking with some students, I realized that this organization would benefit the department as a whole."
Although it is a communication association, CSA encourages others to get involved. It is the hopes of CSA that students will learn valuable skills that they can carry with them and utilize for interviews, job placement and even internships.
The club has held only one meeting, where officers were established for organization purposes. The organization's president is Chad Kyle, a communication major.
Later on in the month a link will be sent to members' university e-mail accounts through meet-o-matic with a survey that will allow CSA to find a time and day that is convenient for students interested in joining the organization.
Whenever a meeting day and time is agreed upon, the meetings will be held monthly. Membership includes, but is not limited to, the option of joining the student's choice of a professional organization. A $5 payment is required for dues, and to be considered an active member, one must attend meetings and participate in club events.
The organization has a number of professional organization affiliations including Public Relations Council of Alabama, Society for Professional Journalists, National Communication Association and Southern States Communication Association. Many events are planned to take place throughout the year.
