'Afternoon of Stars' to feature look at cast of Mobile Opera's new production

The Ben May branch of the Mobile
Public Library will be hosting "Afternoon
of Stars," a production by the Mobile
Opera, on Oct. 14. This event is open to
the public at no charge and will be held at
3:00 p.m. in Bernheim Hall.
"Afternoon of Stars" began in October
1997 under Mobile Opera's Artistic
Director, Jerome Shannon. Shannon sought
to introduce the opera's cast members to its
patrons through this intimate setting free
from costumes and makeup. This year's
"Afternoon of Stars" will feature the cast
from Mobile Opera's production of "La
Traviata." Cast members will be sing their
favorite selections from opera and
Broadway shows. Artist will perform a variety
of solos, duets and ensembles.
On Oct. 25 and 27, viewers can see the
cast in full opera attire at the performance
of "La Traviata." "La Traviata" is a threeact
opera based on the novel by Alexandre
Dumas, published in 1848. "La Traviata,"
meaning "the woman who is strayed," is the
third most performed
opera behind
"Madame Butterfly"
and "La Boheme."
The cast of "La
Traviata" is sure to
please both in and out
of costume. For a

Mobile Opera was founded in 1946 and
is the oldest performing arts organization in
Alabama. It also is recognized as the 15th
opera company to be established in the
United States. This upcoming season will
feature "A Messiah Sing-In," "Some
Enchanted Valentine," an
Evening of Rodgers and
Hammerstein Classics
and "Andrea Chenier."
"Afternoon of Stars" is
expected to last an hour,
followed by a reception
where audience members
may meet-and-greet with
the cast. The performance
will be held at the Ben May Library, located
at 701 Government St. For more information
