presented its Photo IX Juried Photography
Exhibition. The exhibit features regional
photographers, amateur and professional,
working in traditional photographic techniques,
as well as in digital format.
Four of South Alabama's photography
students, along with photography instructor
Rita Skiadas, submitted three works for
review. Each of the five photographers had
at least one piece selected for exhibit.
William Bunce, photography major at
South, had two photographs chosen for
display. "Vanishing Point," a 35mm print
incorporating blurred action, received a
$100 merit award. The digital print "Toy
Preserves," a color image previously published
in the 2007 Oracle, received a merit
award of $125. The 11 x 14 image "Toy
Preserves" creates an eerie presence of preserved
plastic toys. The figurines are held
captive like science experiments awaiting
examination. Bunce's image presents
vibrant colors and a unique perspective.
Photography major and senior Amy
Daws had her image "Egg" exhibited. This
image was also part of Daws's 2007 directed
studies exhibit, "Feast Your Eyes." This
exhibit featured several 11 x 14 studio
images of various foods. Daws used a closeup
filter to capture the detail of each
object. "Egg" centers on an uncooked yolk,
emphasizing tonality and light, creating
beauty from the overlooked aspects of life.
Junior photography major Amanda
Johnson also had one piece selected for the
Photo IX show. Johnson's image "Rebirth,"
an infrared photo montage, was inspired by
the work of Salvador Dali. The image was
sepia toned and selectively hand colored to
give a skin tone to what was originally a
black-and-white print. The surreal landscape
creates a dream-like feeling; perhaps
for some, it may even create a feeling of
nightmares.
Senior photography major Nikki Bhakta
had one image on exhibit. This is Nikki's
second year participating in the Auburn
Art Associations exhibit. Nikki received
juror's mention the previous year for her
stopped action image "Squirt."
Photography instructor Rita Skiadas
had all three of her submissions selected
for exhibit. As a practicing artist and professor,
Rita continually encourages her students
to become involved in the art community,
and she stresses the importance of
entering juried shows.
The Photo IX exhibit will be on display
Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the
Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center in
Auburn through Oct. 13. Admission to the exhibit is free.
