MAYER MITCHELL HAS been a major part of this university for some time now. He spent 31 years on the South Alabama board of trustees including a term as chair.
Many of the trustees looked to him for the best advice, especially when it came to matters of finance and investment. He was regarded as a very brilliant and knowledgeable man who always had the University's best interest in mind.
But the real story of Mayer Mitchell extends well beyond his works as a trustee and university leader. He tirelessly dedicated his life to the improvement of education and health care in our community and beyond.
Through his kind heart and enormous generosity, along with his family's kindness and generosity, he and his family paved the way for a much brighter future at the University of South Alabama and the community of Mobile. The Mitchell family, including Mayer, wife Arlene and brother Abe, has given more than $36.6 million in support to the University. This includes a recent gift of $22 million to support USA's cancer research institute, which is providing state-of-the-art care to people of the Gulf Coast region.
His impact on our institution will have a lasting effect on the University and community for years to come. The investments of his time and money will continue to be seen in very tangible ways.
Several university buildings bear his family's name, as a reminder of their dedication to build this University into something greater. Patients receiving cancer treatment through the University's cancer institute will have Mayer and his family to thank for making their treatment possible. Who knows? Maybe the cure, or at least serious advancements in the treatment, of cancer will come out of their investment.
But there is also the intangible elements of Mayer Mitchell that will continue to live on and affect us all. His tireless work cannot help but to inspire us all to aspire for something greater. His unending giving cannot help but to inspire each and every one of us to be more generous.
Mayer's character will continue to live through each and every person who has, who does and who will ever call himself a "South Alabama Jag."
Mayer Mitchell was, is and forever will be remembered as "Mr. USA."
