Construction is planned to begin soon on phase two of The Grove, and in addition to the original land-lease arrangements negotiated by the University, Campus Crest has promised to construct a 5,000 square foot multi-purpose building at no charge to the University, according to University of South Alabama President Gordon Moulton.
A major part of the motivation to build such a structure has come out of faculty demands to build a faculty clubhouse on campus. Acting as a meeting place for faculty gatherings and faculty senate meetings will be a primary use of the promised building. However, Moulton expressed hesitation referring to it as a faculty clubhouse.
"It will be more of a university club, than just a faculty club," said Moulton.
The faculty senate has been fighting for such a structure for several years.
With the relocation of Career Services to Meisler Hall, the building that Career Services previously occupied was considered as a potential site for the a faculty-gathering site, but was deemed "not a good fit," according to Moulton.
Faculty senate Vice Chairman John Sachs welcomes the promised gift. "Over the last five years, the faculty senate has been pushing for this kind of environment. We are excited to hear we are getting this gift," Sachs said.
Phase two of The Grove will add approximately 500 beds to the current student-housing unit. The apartments of phase two along with the university clubhouse are expected to be completed in time for the fall semester 2009, according to Moulton.
Moulton expects the opening of phase two to go smoother than the first phase.
According to Moulton, Campus Crest did not begin construction on the first phase of The Grove until November of last year. Campus Crest is expected to begin construction on phase two earlier this year.
The opening of phase one was delayed by three days, causing inconvenience for many students, especially for those coming from out of town. Even after the delayed move-in day, construction remained visible for weeks. Many other problems, including plumbing issues, which caused some students to go without water for extended periods of time, were common upon opening of the complex.
Phase two of The Grove will be built south of the current development, along Cleverdon Parkway. The university clubhouse will be built approximately where the current TKE house is along Old Shell Road. The fraternity house, which has been empty for over a year, according to Moulton, will be demolished to make way for the clubhouse.
The clubhouse is expected to cost between $800,000 to $1 million, according to Moulton.
"[Campus Crest] will gift the actual building, not the money. They will build the building to our specification," said Moulton.
Moulton additionally stressed that the building is truly a gift, adding that there was no discount given on the leased land in return for the building.

The TKE House has been empty for only 4 months, not a year. It's nice to know how much South Alabama cares about it's students.

"Let's kick a fraternity out of their house so we can build a faculty lounge"

"On what grounds?"

"Well, they hazed that Chris Mims guy"

"Those charges were dropped and inconclusive because they had no clear evidence they did anything and it appeared to be hearsay"

"You're right, who cares, let's build it anyways! Besides, what have they done for the University?"

"They've been the most involved student organization on campus for the last 12 years, have consistently been the most involved with their community, and have repeatedly shown that they have intelligent members as is evident by their constantly above average GPA"

"They're gonna build us the faculty lounge for free"

"Where do I sign?"

"Right here on this dotted line"

"Who is going to build it?"

"The same people who built the Grove"

"That disgusting trainwreck? Why

Nicely put Logan. For those of you that don't know me, I'm not the type of person that is comfortable voicing my opinion but I have sat silent for far too long. (Continued…)

CORRECTION:
The TKE house along with a second fraternity house along Old Shell Rd will be torn down, according to Dale Adams. It is the site of the second fraternity house where the university clubhouse will be located. (Continued…)
