Three years ago at the student media banquet,
Lagniappe managing editor and Vanguard adviser Rob Holbert leaned over to then-Sports Editor Ben Ward and then-Assistant Sports Editor Jeff Poor and said, “Where is that Daniel Boyette guy? I’d sure like to meet him.”
Unbeknownst to Rob, I was sitting with Ben and Jeff and the anonymity that was with me then followed me over my next three years at The Vanguard. But you won’t hear me complain about it.
Flying under the radar while getting the job done has always been my way of doing things. But the “things” I’m accustomed to doing are quickly coming to an end as my three-year stay at the Vanny G has now come to an end. What lies beyond, who will be in a “Book’em” column and which editor will gripe at me for my incessant mistakes remains to be seen.
Of course, you don’t make it through three tumultuous years at a college rag without some help, and goodness knows I’ve received a good bit of it.
Thanks to Ben Ward, who was willing to give a chance to a marketing major with no prior journalism experience. Ben was a solid example of professionalism and a great teacher (I guess that’s why he does it for a living). After graduating, Ben was there whenever we needed him, snapping pictures, covering soccer and doing the driving to Murfreesboro and Jacksonville for the Jag hoopsters wild run last season.
Then there’s Jeff Poor, former sports partner in crime who jumped ship to the dark side (AKA news). A number of people bailed the paper because they couldn’t handle Jeff’s criticism, but if they couldn’t handle him, I’m not sure how they’ll make it in the “real” world. Jeff has provided numerous opinion columns for me and is always gung-ho about getting to the bottom of a story.
Thanks to Johnny Davis, who was always there for the pro sports previews (despite Jeff’s annoyance with them) and to show me the light of AP style on Sunday nights.
Big props to my current reporter duo of John Kenny and David Hopper, who stuck with it from the start despite my lack of time to properly teach and the insane schedule the job brings. Best of luck to both you guys in your future sports journalism endeavors.
A million thanks to April Havens and the rest of this year’s editorial staff, last year’s crew, past sports writers, Rob, Mrs. Kathy, Kit Strief and the USA SID office, Joe Gottfried, Hal Williams, the posters at the Jags Jungle board and the USA athletes and coaches.
It’s been a great ride and, who knows, maybe I’ll get your letters to the editor at another publication somewhere down the line.
Thanks for reading kids.
Peace, love and all that jazz....
