On Thursday, the University of South Alabama held a topping-out ceremony in honor of the near completion of the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute.
Dr. Michael R. Boyd, director of the institute, said the construction of the building serves as a milestone for the advancement of cancer research and cancer treatment.
"The way this building is designed is to promote the interplay and the interactivity of the scientists, the clinicians and the patients. It's designed to inspire hope and, looking forward, to advancing cancer care through research. That's the spirit of this building," Boyd said.
One of the special features of the building is the glass wall that will separate the research departments from the patient care wards. This will enable patients to look into the lab areas and see the scientists working.
"That's very important," Boyd said. "It's just as important for the researchers to be inspired every day by seeing patients as it is vice versa."
Boyd also pointed out that the putting together of all cancer services under one roof makes it more convenient for patients and researchers. This convenience also allows doctors to collaborate with researchers, enabling them to remain current on new medical advances.
"The environment enables state-of-the-art research and acts as a magnet to attract physicians and researchers," Boyd said. "We have to compete with other institutions around the country for the talent it takes to advance the field."
President Gordon Moulton was one of the speakers present at the ceremony. Moulton said the construction of the building not only advances the research goals of the University, but also helps those in the community. "It's gonna change the way people think about being treated for cancer," Moulton said, "and provide a lot more options for people in this region who have advanced disease. … The main thing is providing new ways to cure disease, new ways to prevent cancer and try to communicate that to this community. It will make a great deal of difference."
