The South Alabama softball team enjoyed a flawless week, winning a pair of home games over Alcorn State before sweeping a three-game set at Louisiana-Monroe.
USA shut out the Alcorn State Braves in both games of a doubleheader Tuesday at Jaguar Field.
The Jaguars defeated the Braves 7-0 in the first game and 4-0 in the nightcap.
"[These two wins] get us hopefully back on track," said USA coach Becky Clark. "This helps us kind of get our feet back under us and get a little confidence going. [It helps us] remember that we do hit the ball and we can hit the ball hard. Games like this let you just relax a little and play the game the way it's supposed to be played."
In the opener, Beth Pilgrim (6-4) pitched the entire game for USA, striking out seven batters, walking one and allowing only three hits. Tynetta Sims (4-11) of the Braves (10-23) threw six innings, fanning two, walking two and giving up six runs.
After South Alabama left a total of five runners stranded in the first couple innings, Carolina Mendoza helped the Jaguars get on the board by driving in two runs in the third inning. Kristen Hayes and Jenny Stevens both singled up the middle with two outs. Mendoza, who was 2-of-2 with three RBIs in game one, then batted in Hayes and Stevens with a line drive double to left-center.
The Jaguars piled on four more runs on six hits in the next inning. Kait Chernomaz kicked things off with a solo homer to left-center, her second bomb of the season. Evelyne Pare then singled and advanced to second base on a bad throw. Corey Race drove in Pare with a double to right-center. Donaldson then singled, advancing Race to third base. A blooper single to left-center from Hayes scored Race and advanced Donaldson. Mendoza stepped up for the Jaguars again with two outs and belted a double to right-center that scored Stevens.
In the sixth inning, the Jaguars added one more run to make it 7-0. Donaldson singled down the right-field line, and Amanda Leggett pinch-ran for her. Hayes walked, advancing Leggett to second and Stevens reached on a fielder's choice and advanced on a throwing error. Hayes was thrown out at second, and Leggett scored an unearned run.
