SGA Vice President Jennifer Edwards announced last week she was no longer seeking the SGA presidency for the 2007-08 academic year.
"I've decided not to run for the SGA presidency," Edwards said. "I'm going to focus on academics and other opportunities."
Edwards is considering taking an internship this upcoming academic year that could conflict with Student Government Association duties.
SGA Treasurer Richard Soto had been her only opposition until the time of her decision. Elections are slated for the first week of April, according to "The Lowdown," the USA Student Handbook.
"It's unfortunate," Soto said about Edwards' decision not to run. "Jennifer's a friend, and I wish her the best."
New SGA presidential candidates? Statkewicz in
Edwards decision has caused the two vice presidential candidates to consider making a run for SGA president.
Martin Statkewicz told The Vanguard late Sunday he was going to run for the SGA presidency.
"I'm going to run for president now that Jennifer has left the race," Statkewicz said via e-mail.
AASA President Jonathan Correia told The Vanguard Thursday he was also considering running for president instead of vice president but had not made a commitment.
Soto and Statkewicz could split the Greek vote. Soto is a member of Kappa Sigma, and Stakewicz is the Sigma Chi president.
