Gov. Bob Riley on March 19 appointed a University of South Alabama alumnus to the University's Board of Trustees.
Scott Charlton, a physician from Enterprise, Ala., who received his medical degree from USA in 1994, will represent Coffee and Crenshaw Counties in Alabama.
Charlton, whose term is effective immediately, will succeed the late Jack R. Brunson, who served on the Board of Trustees from 1989 until his death in March 2006.
"It's certainly an honor above all else to be able to come back and serve my university where I got my medical degree that I use every day," Charlton said.
On March 22, Charlton toured USA and met with University officials, and he said he enjoyed seeing the expansion taking place at the University.
"I was real excited in looking at the expansion that's going on, on campus, the capital improvements," Charlton said, "how it's going to affect students directly, not only classroom size-wise, amenities-wise, but also the improvement of student life, like the recreation center proposal."
Charlton said he sees the USA growing more into a major university and that he's looking forward to being involved with the school's continuing growth.
"The South campus is becoming what most people would consider a year-round, full-time college campus," he said, "which hadn't necessarily been that way even back when I was in medical school. That is probably the most exciting thing I got out of my first meeting."
Charlton said he was struck at how different the campus looks since the last time he was at USA.
"The new architecture is just beautiful," he said. "It's just a much more aesthetically pleasing campus than when I left. The way the campus looks now compared to when I left 13 years ago, it just looks like a more mature college campus."
Charlton was born in Lansthul, Germany and grew up in Tuscaloosa. He received his bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Alabama.
Charlton was class president while at medical school and graduated from USA with honors. He was also a member of a number of medical honor societies, including Alpha Omega Alpha.
After receiving his medical degree, Charlton completed his residency at the University of Connecticut Health Center.
"We loved New England," Charlton said. "After spending five years there, it was home for that time. But we had the opportunity to come back [to Alabama]. We had family ties and friends in Dale County and Coffee County. That's what drew me back to the wiregrass."
Charlton is an ear, nose and throat specialist and practices at Southeastern ENT, Allergy and Sinus Center in Enterprise. He also is a staff physician at Medical Center Enterprise and Dale Medical Center in Ozark.
Charlton is the fourth USA alumni to be appointed to the Board of Trustees in the last six months, bringing the total number of trustees to 17. Also serving on the board is Mobile Mayor Sam Jones and Gov. Bob Riley.
