Over the next month, the Mobile Townhouse Gallery will be displaying a series of senior thesis exhibitions by students majoring in arts. From April 4-7, photography and graphic design major Beth Brothers will have her BFA photography thesis exhibition on display. She has decided to title her exhibition "Affirmation."
"Affirmation" is a representation of the images Brothers feels are interpretations of daily affirmations.
"Within our society, people never stop to slow down and look at the world around them. … We often miss the true meaning behind the signs in front of us," she said.
Brothers was inspired for this work by recent family events that helped her to realize the value of life. She hopes that this show will persuade the viewer to "stop and think about the significance of life, if only for a moment."
Brothers decided to use black and white photography for her exhibit. The situations represented in the images all include action and are shown through the use of blurred motion.
"Although the action may be as subtle as the flickering of a candle, these images represent the different events in our life. ... It is the little things that matter most," she said.
"Affirmation" includes photographs that represent on a deeper level some of the clichés we hear on an everyday basis. For instance, clichés such as "The world doesn't slow down for you" and "getting to know people on different layers" are represented in Brothers' work. Brothers also has included some photographs that represent some of the daily self-affirmations she uses to help push through difficult situations, such as "You're just getting your feet wet."
For this exhibition, Brothers decided to use a large format camera in order to have complete control over each image.
"Viewers eyes will be guided through each image with the use of movement and selective focus," she said. "The entire subject matter isn't in focus because within life every situation isn't crystal clear."
Since her father is a photographer, Brothers grew up around the art and has grown to love it. She hopes that this show will be a "positive and uplifting" experience that reflects her life and the affirmations that have inspired her. Her intent in creating this show was to make the viewer "stop and think about the importance of life and the meanings behind the situations people face."
"Affirmation" will open on April 4 at the Mobile Townhouse Gallery. The Gallery's hours are 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Also, several other USA students will be displaying their senior exhibitions during the month of April.
