The hot topic at Monday's Student Government Association was the language involved with a largely symbolic resolution showing support of the University administration's efforts to build a new student recreation center on campus.
The resolution, opposed most vocally by College of Arts and Sciences Sens. Jeffrey Harris and Michael Smith, included the phrase "Bleed it Red," which has become the unofficial battle cry for the University of South Alabama.
Smith felt the inclusion of the phrase "Bleed it Red" made it less formal and opposed the approval of the resolution.
The SGA Senate eventually passed the measure, Resolution SGA/1/1, titled "Supporting the New Student Recreation Center."
SGA presidential candidate Richard Soto releases platform
SGA treasurer and future SGA president hopeful Richard Soto revealed his presidential platform last week.
According to the release, Soto has a three-pronged attack. The first prong involves SGA unifying the student body through use of a weekly president's table with SGA senators and officers, a public relations team with more interaction with student media and a report of this progress made available to the student body.
His second prong includes implementing various measures geared toward the international student community at the University to "expand awareness and knowledge" of the people from the other continents who attend USA. He also proposes a formal event to be part of this prong.
With Soto's third prong, he proposes enhanced involvement of the various student organizations on campus. Soto also proposes to make sure potential issues and inconsistencies involving the student handbook, "The Lowdown," are addressed by a committee consisting of students and SGA senators, meeting on a weekly basis.
Mikey Hendrich announces SGA attorney general candidacy
The first candidate to publicly declare his candidacy for the SGA attorney general position is advertising major Mikey Hendrich.
Hendrich wants to make a big impact on campus according to his Facebook candidacy profile and reminds his supporters to "Spread the word" and "Bleed it Red."

Facebook campaign group membership has hit a lull in the weeks leading up to Spring Break. Soto has gained some ground on SGA presidential candidate Jennifer Edwards; however, a large chunk of both groups' membership include the same people skewing the informal measurement somewhat.
