The long-awaited additions to the Mitchell College of Business (MCOB) are now complete. The learning resource center and business library opened for student use on Feb. 26.
It took no time for students to begin taking advantage of the new space. Several students expressed satisfaction with the new amenities. Jessica Wilson, a final year marketing major, especially appreciates the much-needed computer lab.
"I think it's great actually, better than I thought it would be," Wilson said. "It's very convenient and there's more space. The computer lab is really nice. We all like new computers."
The 10,000-square-foot addition contains a 28-seat computer lab, the John B. Saint financial analysis center and several group study rooms within the library. Construction began on the building in January 2006. Although the library opened last week, a construction crew is still working on the final details. Bricks are being laid for the alumni walk, in which USA graduates can purchase bricks to be inscribed with their names. The exterior sign for the learning resource center is nearly complete as well.
"We're very pleased to be able to do this for students. It's something that has been needed for a very long time," Business Dean Carl Moore commented. "We are proud of the building and proud of the support we received from donors who made this possible."
Minor delays with the delivery of furniture and equipment set the project back only slightly. The facility was still able to open for student use within the projected time period. The final cost cannot be determined until all work is complete. The estimated budget at this point is $2.6 million.
Kenneth Barney, an accounting major, is a junior at South. "The library is nice and quiet," he said. "It seems like we could have had more closed off rooms, but it looks like they made the most of the space they had to work with."
The MCOB library is open from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. on weekdays. According to Dr. Moore, they are still looking for additional staff members. Once the library is fully staffed, the hours of operation will be expanded to include evenings and weekends.
