The Public Relations Student Society (PRSS) at South Alabama offers a plethora of benefits including professional development, the opportunity to build a resume, establishment in a professional network and the ability to build on those contacts, and the environment needed to develop a portfolio while in college. Scholarship, internship and leadership prospects are also available. Members of PRSS you are automatically members of the Public Relations Council of Alabama (PRCA) as well.
"PRSS is not just for communication students or public relations students. It is open to everyone. Students interested in writing, art, graphic art, web design and communication in general should definitely join," Katherine Rigsby, PRSS adviser, said. "PRSS can't be involved in more activities if there aren't more members. It's a vicious cycle. We need more people involved in PRSS now so we can do more things," Rigsby said.
The major upcoming event for PRSS is Communication Day at the beginning of April. Communication Day is an all day event bringing many professional and experienced speakers to South Alabama.
Speakers from all areas of communication including print journalism, broadcast journalism, advertising, organizational communication, rhetoric, public relations, technology, radio, TV and film will give presentations the morning of Communication Day. In the afternoon, there will be a variety of events including a keynote speaker, resume and portfolio critique session, and PRSS membership information session.
"I think that being a member of the PRSS will certainly help in my pursuit of a career when I get out of school," Hal Scheurich, public relations major and vice president of PRSS, said. "My favorite part of public relations is crisis type resolution more than anything. I have a great interest in ethics and always enjoy working with people. I thought it would be fun to get this club back into full swing."
"I like PRSS because it is beneficial to all majors," prospective senior Thomas Buterai said. "There are a lot of businesses in Mobile that would benefit from it and we would be able to help them by them helping us."
