USA hosted its first ever Electroacoustic Music concert last year, paying homage to a genre that fuses recorded or computer-generated sounds with acoustic elements. Wednesday night, the second Electroacoustic Music Concert returns at the Laidlaw Recital Hall, and it will highlight USA's homegrown talent.
"I feel like a complete proud papa," USA music professor David Durant said of his student's compositions in the concert.
USA students presenting their compositions includes Bryant Gilley, Caleb Givens, Nicholas Markow and Olivia LeSeur. USA graduate Colin Pool will return for the premiere of his work "Noir," performed by USA professor Tracy Heavner.
At the previous concert, LeSeur presented her composition "Tunnel," which also has been played at the U.S. International Computer Music concert and the U.S. Conference of the Society of Electroacoustic Music. According to Durant, gaining recognition at both events is considered an important achievement.
"She's an amazing young composer," he said.
For this concert, LeSeur is presenting her recorded work, "Spectrum Disorder," named for the psychological disorder of anxiety, depression and obsessive compulsive disorder.
"It's a musical representation of three disorders. ... It goes through the three distinct sections," she said. The work is comprised of music samples she created at USA along with some recordings of her playing electric guitar.
"It's very 'art music,'" said Durant.
Tae Hung Park, assistant professor at Tulane University, also returns as a special guest artist. USA's Dr. Peter Wood will perform Park's "T1 for Trumpet and Digital Audio," and Durant will perform his own work titled "Vista."
"I wrote it mainly all last summer and early fall," said Durant. "It's a lot of just noisy electronic sounds and several full piano pieces made by synthesized piano. It's active and chaotic and rather chorded and mystical sounding."
According to Durant, the concert should last an hour, and admission is free. "Kind of fasten your seat belts, cover your ears and have a good time," he said.
